Choose images with a purpose
Use photographs that explain a product, place or service. Several near-identical images can increase page weight without adding useful information. Select the most informative view and move detailed galleries to the page where visitors need them.
Prepare appropriate sizes
Keep original images separately and deliver smaller web versions suited to the layout. A mobile card does not need the same file as a full-screen desktop photograph. Modern image formats and responsive sizing can help when implemented correctly.
Protect the opening content
Give images dimensions so the layout does not jump as they load. Prioritise the main visual and defer images further down the page where appropriate. Essential contact and service information should remain readable before every image has arrived.
Test realistic conditions
Review the page on a phone and a slower connection, not only a fast office network. Look for delayed controls, moving text and images that are too soft to be useful. Recheck performance when new photography is added.
